It has come to our attention that some phishing emails are being sent with the appearance that they are from our office. These emails are requesting financial information and are framed as a request for closing proceeds for a real estate transaction. These emails are NOT from our office. If you receive one, please do not click any links or provide any information in response to one of these emails. The email may reference a property address that you recently purchased or are in the process of purchasing. The email may also have a “signature” that looks like our logo and typical email signature (but there are subtle differences, further explained below).
If our office is assisting you with a closing or real estate transaction, any request for wiring instructions or financial information would be made by secure encrypted email through our security filtering system, Barracuda, or would come through our secure client portal through Clio, our case management software, never through regular/unsecured email.
We strongly encourage you to call our office if you have any questions or concerns about an email you may receive from us requesting financial/settlement fund information from you. However, to best prepare you, below are some ways you can tell that the email you received is NOT from Hopkinson & Abbondanza:
Our web domain/email addresses are all @hablaw.com. The phishing emails seem to be coming from addresses that are @hablaws.com. Please check the email address of the sender carefully.
Our business telephone number in Portland is 207-772-5845. Our Bath office number is 207-386-0400. On the phishing emails that have been received by some of our contacts, the telephone numbers have been changed in the sender’s email signature.
Again, PLEASE do not reply to any of these phishing emails and always call our office at 207-772-5845 before providing financial information electronically if you have any concerns that it may not be a request actually coming from us. Thank you.
